ここでは、比較級の言い換え表現と慣用表現について学習していきます。スピーキングで使われる表現ですので、何度も音読して暗記しましょう。
比較級の言い換え表現
比較級にはasを使うもの、thanを使うもの、そして最上級の形をとるものがあります。ここでは、１つの例文を使って上記の３つに言い換える練習をしていきます。下の例文を見てください。
= No other person in the world is as smart as he (is). （同等比較）
= No other person in the world is smarter than he (is). （比較）
= He is smarter than any other person in the world. （比較）
太字の部分は、smart以外全て固定です。no otherのotherは形容詞なので、その後ろには名詞が必要です。比べる対象によって、この名詞は変わります（上記の例では、比べる対象が人なので、personとなります）。
日本語の発想から考える場合、一番発想しやすいのは最上級を使う形であり、私自身もスピーキングではこの形を一番使います。しかし、表現の幅を広げるためにもこの４つの言い換え表現は暗記してしまいましょう。
比較級の慣用表現
会話でよく使われる慣用表現を学習していきます。
You need to run as fast as you can
= You need to run as fast as possible.
We may (= might) as well go home.
「他に良い選択肢がないから」というニュアンスを含んでいます。降伏するなら死んだ方がましだ。
I might as well die as surrender.私はこの上なく幸せだ。
I am as happy as can be.
問題は費用よりむしろ効率性だ。
The problem is not so much cost as efficiency.
= The problem is efficiency rather than cost.
= The problem is more efficiency than cost.
彼は私ににこりともしなかった。
He did not so much as smile at me.
= He didn’t even smile at me.
会話では、evenがよく使われます。
最上級の慣用表現
会話でよく使われる最上級の慣用表現を覚えていきましょう。
The smartest student in our class couldn’t solve this problem.
They have come at last.彼は遅くとも９時に来る。
He will come at nine at (the) latest.
彼は早くとも９時に来る。
He will come at nine at (the) earliest.
ここは世界で４番目に大きい国です。
This is the fourth largest country in the world.
