英語の文法：不定代名詞を使った慣用表現

彼は本を一冊ずつ手に取った。
He took books one by one.

彼らはお互いに抱きしめあった。
They hugged one another.　(= each other)

彼は青い本と黒い本を持っている。　私は前者より後者が好きだ。
He has a blue and a black book; I like the one better than the other.

彼はこちら側から向こう側へ走って行った。
He ran from this side to the other.

知っていることと教えることは別だ。
To know is one thing, to teach is another.　(A is one thing, B is another)

彼らは交互(次々）にカードを配った
They dealt the cards one after the other.　（２人の場合）
= They dealt one cards after the other.
They dealt the cards one after another. 　（３人以上の場合）
= They dealt one cards after another.

一方では彼は天才と呼ばれているが、他方ではイカれていると言われている。
On the one hand he is called a genius, on the other hand he is said to be crazy.

私はこのインテリアは嫌いだが、それ以外は特に気にしない。
I don’t like this interior. Other than that, I don’t mind in particular.
in particularで「特に」という意味です。

彼はとりわけ電車が好きだ。
He likes trainsamong other things.

彼があなたをぶったのかそれとも逆か？
Did he hit you or was it the other way (a)round?

いつか彼女に会えるよ。
You’ll be able to see her some day.

いずれにしても、この問題は早急に対処すべきだ。
In any case, this problems should be dealt with immediately.

わたしはどんな犠牲を払ってもそれを取り戻す。
I will get it back at any cost.

とにかくこの原因を調べなければならない。
We have to investigate the cause at any rate.
